Wilkes County landfill awarded $570,000 DEQ recycling grant; no county match required

Wilkes County accepted a preliminary $570,000 recycling infrastructure grant from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to upgrade recycling and convenience-center equipment at the county landfill.
Landfill Director Anderia Byrd told the board the award requires no county cash match and outlined planned purchases: a new roll-off truck, a dump trailer, three drive-in trailers, 21 recycling dumpsters, a ton truck, $10,000 for waste-education efforts, and any remaining funds for paving repairs at the landfill. Byrd recognized recycling coordinator Adam Brisendon for his role in securing the grant. She requested the board accept the grant; Commissioner Bill Sexton moved to accept and the motion carried unanimously.
Byrd said funds will be available July 1, 2026, and emphasized the county will use the grant to modernize recycling operations and improve convenience centers.
