County approves sewer easements for airport; says EDA funding contingent on completed easements

Wilkes County approved three Declarations of Sewer Line Easement for county-owned parcels required to extend sewer service to the Wilkes County Airport.
County Attorney Tony Triplett explained the legal mechanism: when the county owns a parcel it uses a Declaration of Easement to make the land subject to the sewer easement. Commissioner Bill Sexton moved to approve Declarations for Parcel IDs 16-02647, 16-00598, and 16-02555; the motions were seconded and passed unanimously. County Manager John Yates said the easements must be in place before the Economic Development Administration will release project funding. He stated they had previously received a $6 million award and "they have to have all the easements completed before the EDA will turn loose with the $2.2 billion they’ve applied for to finish this sewer project out," and praised local partners for grant work.
Commissioners said sewer access to the airport corridor will allow nearby properties to connect and help address a dilapidated system affecting airport operations.
