The Board approved an Acknowledgement and Ratification Agreement between Wilkes County, the Wilkes County Board of Education and Carolina West Wireless to formalize a 2019 antenna lease that was never completed.
County Attorney Tony Triplett said the agreement "basically says that all three parties hereby ratify, acknowledge, and agree that this is what we meant to do in 2019 and the lease that was supposed to be signed at that time is attached as an exhibit." The matter involves two antennae — one at North Wilkes Middle School and one at West Wilkes High School — that were permitted in 2019 but for which the written lease was not finalized when the schools and county ownership arrangements were changed during financing transactions.
Vice Chairman Evan Handy confirmed Carolina West Wireless will pay back rent for prior years; Bergie Speaks, Director of Facilities and Construction for Wilkes County Schools, confirmed that is correct. Commissioner Shirley Randleman moved to approve the Acknowledgement and Ratification Agreement and to authorize County Manager John Yates to execute the document on behalf of the county; the motion passed unanimously.
