Residents push to restore kitchen, add ADA access at Huachuca City Activity Center

Several residents told the March 21 public hearing that the Huachuca City Activity Center needs renovation to function as a community hub. Diane Hildebrant asked the council to “get the kitchen back in the Activity Center, and also making the Activity Center ADA compliant,” noting the existing ramp but saying doors and bathrooms remain barriers.
Town Manager Suzanne Harvey and SEAGO staff discussed whether a kitchen renovation could be scoped as a single project or folded into a broader building modernization. William Osborne recommended considering state special project (SSP) funding for planning and engineering so the town could present a shovel‑ready implementation request for CDBG regional money. Osborne said SSP grants can fund design work that improves competitiveness for larger construction awards.
Councilmembers noted potential revenue generation through rentals and the facility’s role for seniors, after‑school activities and community meals. Mayor Johann Wallace directed that the Activity Center idea be listed among the hearing’s candidate projects for the formal resolution to Council.
