Sheriff seeks $100,000 detection device; commissioners approve jail promotion and vehicle replacement

Somerset County Sheriff Lancaster told commissioners that synthetic drugs (referred to as 'spice') are increasingly being introduced into the jail through mail and printer ink, and that a detection device and five-year service agreement are being evaluated with a current estimate of about $100,000. The Sheriff and County Administrator Tim Curtis agreed such a purchase would be an appropriate use of opioid settlement funds; the Sheriff is collecting final figures and will report back.
Separately, the commission approved two items related to jail operations. Resolution 26-24, moved by Commissioner John Alsop and seconded by Commissioner Scott Seekins, promoted Jean Waugh to Corporal at the Somerset County Jail and passed 5-0. Resolution 26-25 authorized transfer of capital funds to facilitate replacement of the 2014 Ford Taurus used for jail administration; the Sheriff explained a plan to purchase a 2025 Explorer, cascade a detective vehicle into the administrative role and retire the Taurus. That capital transfer motion carried 5-0.
