Ottawa County sheriff honors deputies for life‑saving response and tactical work

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office presented life‑saving awards June 24 to deputies who performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator in a courthouse medical emergency, sheriff’s staff said. Sheriff (speaker 7) identified Deputies Scott Fairfield, Tim Moncuhn and Derrick Matthews as the life‑saving award recipients and described how their coordinated response helped the individual survive.
The sheriff also presented a sheriff’s commendation to a team credited with responding to a series of armed‑suspect and high‑risk incidents earlier in the year. The board acknowledged deputies named by the sheriff — including Matt Johnson, Forrest Sable, Joe Roloff, Tyler Miller, Debbie Andrew Nagelkirk, James Root, Teresa Hartman, John Maher and Steven Garland — for recovering firearms, safely apprehending suspects and preventing further harm.
“We will begin with an incident that occurred on May 1 at the Grand Haven Courthouse,” the sheriff said while describing the courthouse rescue and the rapid deployment of the AED. The sheriff also presented a commendation for sustained tactical excellence and named Sergeant Chad Colson for his supervisory role during the incidents.
Chair and commissioners offered public thanks to the department, with the board saying the county was fortunate to have the sheriff’s office and its deputies protecting residents. The recognition concluded without formal board action; commissioners moved on to other agenda items.
