Somerset Woods Trustees asked Somerset County for a $15,000 matching grant to support the $366,000 purchase of the 175-acre Gilman Stream Forest in New Portland. The trustees say the acquisition would secure public access for recreation, hunting, fishing and trail connections; the application notes the organization previously received $15,000 from the county in fall 2024 for headquarters window replacement.
County Administrator Tim Curtis presented the application during the board’s Spring 2026 preliminary review; commissioners agreed to place the request on a future agenda for individual action. No county funding decision was made at the May 20 meeting.
