Work session: coroner requests $2,000 for deputy coverage; commissioners seek more info on radio upgrade

During the Dec. 22 work session, Coroner Ron Hedgecoke asked the commission to amend the coroner budget by $2,000 to retain an additional deputy coroner and achieve 24-hour coverage. Hedgecoke said a deputy coroner is paid only "$25.00 a pay period" and that the extra funding would cover training and operational needs. Chairman Coffey said the commission would not decide on the request immediately and would follow up after staff review.
County Manager Thomas Weaver and commissioners also discussed an upgrade to the county’s public-safety radio system. Weaver said a vendor quote covered radios for the sheriff's office with equipment costs around $68,152 and per-handset costs potentially in the $7,000–$8,000 range; commissioners asked the sheriff’s office and a vendor representative to attend the next regular meeting to present details. Weaver additionally reviewed procurement items connected to the SEID grant engineer selection and zoning-contract renewals; he recommended EMC Engineering for the trail grant selection process and asked staff to add a procurement item to the Jan. 6 agenda.
Commissioners did not vote on the coroner request or the radio purchase at the work session; both items were left for future consideration with staff follow-up.
