The Board of Commissioners voted on Aug. 5 to reduce the Planning & Zoning Board from seven members to five. Commissioner Jason Frost moved for the change; Commissioners Timothy Biddle and Damon Hoyte opposed the motion and Chairman Charles Coffey cast the tie-breaking vote in favor.
The commission described the change as a short-term fix to be memorialized by resolution in the minutes, with a longer-term fix to be made by amending the zoning ordinance. Commissioner Frost said he preferred a five-member board while acknowledging applications will be kept on file. Resident Latrese Brown told the commission she had submitted an application and was willing to serve if a seat opened.
The commission recorded that the first two vacancies (one already open and the next coming due) will not be filled so the board reduces to five members as current terms expire. County Attorney Bin Minter advised that a follow-up ordinance amendment would be a more permanent solution.
Next steps: staff will post the resolution and keep applicants on file; legal staff will prepare ordinance language for a future meeting if the commission pursues a permanent change.
