Commission appoints Sheila Wilson to Tax Assessor board over ethics objection from commissioner

The Commission of the Unified Government of Cusseta–Chattahoochee County appointed Sheila Wilson to Post 2 of the Board of Tax Assessors for a four-year term beginning July 1, 2025. Commissioner Gerald Douglas moved to appoint Wilson; Vice-Chairman Timothy Biddle seconded the motion and the appointment carried with one recorded dissent from Commissioner Damon Hoyte.
The appointment drew a public ethics exchange during the vote. Chairman Charles Coffey told the commission that “when it comes to…Planning & Zoning board, we have to be careful and be sure it isn't an ethics violation,” and said for the record that Commissioner Hoyte is suing Ms. Wilson and two other citizens and the Unified Government. Commissioner Hoyte earlier moved to table the appointment but did not secure a second; he told the board he had previously encouraged public participation in commissions and thanked those who applied. The minutes record that the motion to appoint Ms. Wilson passed with Hoyte opposed. The county clerk recorded the term as July 1, 2025 through July 1, 2029.
