Julie Raphtelis, Rockport's newly introduced instructional coach, spoke to the committee about her role and how coaching cycles operate in classrooms across the district. Raphtelis said coaching begins with a teacher meeting to set goals, includes classroom observations and modeling of lessons for one to two weeks, and culminates in a gradual release where the teacher resumes primary instruction and completes a reflection form. "This job provides me the opportunities to model and co-teach lessons in classrooms with the students... Through data driven data meetings, I'm able to work with teachers," Raphtelis said.
Raphtelis described working with multiple grade levels and noted she limits her cycles to two teachers at a time to preserve quality. Committee members welcomed the update, noting the coaching model is intentionally separate from evaluation and that staff feedback forms will be used at the end of cycles to refine the program. The presentation underscored the instructional-coaching link to MTSS and curriculum work discussed earlier in the meeting.
