Rockport high school students describe AP, VHS, internships and capstone experiences

A panel of Rockport High School juniors and seniors told the School Committee that AP offerings, virtual (VHS) courses and internships are helping students pursue individualized academic and career paths. Wyatt Wilkinson described taking AP chemistry this year and planning to take calculus and physics next year; several students noted AP exam dates (AP Biology exam on May 5, one student said) and praised teachers who teach both lower- and upper-level courses. "It's difficult, but we're doing a pretty good job," Wyatt said of the AP chemistry course.
Students also discussed VHS (virtual high school) classes used to access courses not available in person, including computer science and music theory; one student said VHS helped them get into a desired college program. Internships and a new capstone program were highlighted: students described placements in local businesses (a fish shack, family car care, boat work) and music studio experiences; one student reported the internship requires a minimum of 30 hours per week at the designated location. Principal Amy Rose said the capstone offers students experience with leadership and operational aspects of running a school.
