Rockport students showcase math, reading and social-emotional learning to school committee

Students from Rockport Elementary and intermediate grades presented classroom work to the Rockport School Committee on April 2, describing daily routines, digital programs and hands-on learning. Third graders Rose Bingle and Moe Twombly explained that math lessons include group word-problem work, worksheets and computer practice through I-Ready; Moe said the 'Fluency Flight' practice focuses on multiplication facts and MyPath adapts to each learner so classmates may work on different levels. "Fluency flight is... you're expected to do 4 days in a row to get fluent with something," one third grader said.
Fourth graders described the HMH reading program and Waggle, noting varied genres, nonfiction texts about topics such as the Grand Canyon and the Mariana Trench, and online quizzes and vocabulary activities. Fifth graders described science labs—one student recounted a filtration lab tied to a local flood scenario—and CELA social-emotional rotations where music, art, tech/library and gym/health teachers team to teach cooperation and perspective-taking. Principal Waterman and committee members praised the presentations as authentic examples of student learning and recommended using clips for community outreach.
