Back-to-school: Rockport reports 262 elementary students, classroom moves and new ceramics studio plans

Superintendent Mark Branca and school principals gave the committee a back-to-school update highlighting enrollment numbers, staffing, and early school-year events.
The elementary principal reported welcoming 262 students pre-K through grade 5, including 31 kindergarten students and 22 preschool students; there were eight new students in grades 1–5, two new paraprofessionals and two new permanent substitutes. "We welcomed 262 students, pre k to grade 5, 31 kindergarten students, 22 preschool students, 8 new students in grades 1 through 5, 2 new paraprofessionals, and 2 new permanent substitutes," the elementary principal said.
The middle/high principal described orientation events for sixth graders and freshmen, a senior cruise and a breakfast on opening morning, and noted roughly 22 new students across grades 6–12. The principal also reported three of four varsity wins the prior night and said the district had completed approximately 12 classroom moves to support the new 6–12 model, with the goal that each teacher will now have a permanent classroom.
Facility updates included a new senior cafe and plans to create a dedicated ceramics studio (moving a kiln out of a shared middle-high art room into a former health room) to reduce safety concerns and support six ceramics classes for grades 6–12. The superintendent and principals thanked community partners, including the RTA PTO, the Ed Foundation and Brothers Brew, for sponsoring meals and staff recognition gifts.
