Board adopts VDOT Secondary Six-Year Road Plan after public hearing

The Grayson County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously May 14 to approve the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Secondary Six-Year Road Plan for FY2026/27 through 2031/32 and the accompanying FY2026/27 Secondary System Construction Budget.

James Schwartz, VDOT Residency Administrator in Wytheville, presented the plan and said VDOT crews were "still playing catch-up from Hurricane Helene" while several projects are already under construction, including Route 730 (Low Gap Road), Route 636 (Beech Grove Road), Route 715 (Pleasant Grove Road), Route 713 (Beagle Lane) and Route 615 (Grouse Hollow). He also listed projects in engineering expected to reach construction soon: Route 632 (Cold Springs Road), Route 701 (Cornerstone Road) and Route 740 (Low Gap Road).

Schwartz reported funding figures during the presentation: total funding cited for FY27–FY32 was $975,831; he noted Chestnut Grove Road had previously been added but was not fully funded and cited $309,830 associated with that carryover; a $35,834 deduction for communication lines in rights-of-way was reported; and a line item of $939,937 was identified as state funds for unpaved roads. The Board approved the resolution adopting the plan following the public hearing.

Supervisor Mary E. Dickenson Tomlinson moved to adopt the resolution and Supervisor Paul G. Richardson seconded; the motion carried on a 5–0 roll-call vote. The resolution directs that the plan, as presented at the May 14 public hearing, be forwarded in certified form to the VDOT Residency Administrator for concurrence and implementation as appropriate.
