Council directs GIS mapping of water lines, flags meters as leak hunt continues

The Huntsville Town Council voted 5–0 to authorize a contract with Gateway Mapping, Inc. to map secondary and culinary water lines as part of a push to locate recurring leaks and to improve asset management. Water Board Chair Ron Gault explained the contractor would bill roughly $275 per hour and the board had hired a student helper to reduce costs; the council added 'culinary water lines' to the contract scope before approving Resolution 2025-5-1-B.
Gault said the system has shown unusually high pressure and distribution figures that exceed metered usage and described repeated leaks on 1800 S that point to weld or bedding issues. He urged residents to flag meter locations to speed the GIS project; staff suggested recruiting a Boy Scout group to place flags. The council described the mapping work and leak detection as essential to prioritize repairs and to support any later rate changes.
