Tooele County reports largest tax sale in years; one parcel fetched over $3 million

A county staff presenter reported to the Tooele County Council that the office began the year’s tax sale list with 69 parcels and that the sale produced an unusually large return to property owners.
The presenter said 33 parcels were paid before sale day, 14 were sold at auction, nine were deferred, 11 were pulled for corrections and two were pulled for other reasons (for example, an owner filing bankruptcy). "We did end up selling one parcel this year that sold for over $3,000,000," the presenter said, and added the sale process will return over $4,300,000 to taxpayers whose properties were on the list.
Staff explained notice procedures used before the sale—running the notice six times in the paper (county policy exceeds the four-time legal minimum), first-class and certified mail, and maintaining a posted list on the county website—and urged owners to keep contact information current via the county recorder’s office.
The presenter also described two parcels that were "struck to the county" (no bids). One is a very small parcel with about $69 in back taxes that staff expect to offer to an adjacent owner under an assessed-value sale process; the other is near the army depot and may need appraisal work before being surplussed or transferred.
Council members asked about state reporting and unclaimed-proceeds processes; staff said proceeds are sent to the state as unclaimed property when owners cannot be found, and that staff will attempt to contact owners where possible.
