Heather Morgan provided the board with multiple economic development updates, including progress on the Sawyer natural gas project and a new state grant opportunity. She said Kansas Gas Service "anticipates completing pipe installation by the end of the week" and that the system is expected to be operational prior to the upcoming heating season; KGS has agreed to move forward with Sawyer’s connection independently so residents may begin service sooner.
Morgan also briefed commissioners on a Kansas Department of Commerce pilot program called IRON, available to communities with populations under 50,000 and offering grants up to $200,000 to rehabilitate existing industrial buildings for future business use. She closed by noting that April tax collections for the State of Kansas were lower than anticipated in several areas and cautioned that those trends could affect local budgeting during the upcoming budget season.
