Berrien County honors longtime emergency manager Rockey Adams on retirement

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted Resolution B2602715 on Feb. 26, 2026, honoring Captain Rockey Adams for more than 25 years of service to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office and his work as coordinator of the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division.
Commissioner Jim Curran read the resolution to the board and highlighted Adams’ roles across marine patrol, jail and road patrol, investigations, and as Captain and emergency management coordinator. The resolution notes Adams “secured more than $8 million in homeland security grant funding for Southwest Lower Michigan,” and lists major incidents he helped coordinate including the 2011 Sawyer truck explosion, the 2017 Niles tornado and COVID-19 operations. Chairperson R. McKinley Elliott dispensed with a roll call and the board approved the resolution by voice vote.
The resolution also records Adams’ service as a Hazardous Materials Response Team member and bomb technician and cites his receipt of the 2025 Distinguished Emergency Manager Award from the Michigan Emergency Management Association. The board extended its congratulations and best wishes to Adams upon his retirement.
