Council hears first reading of classification and wage-scale update

During a first reading, Finance Director Matthew Mesisklis reviewed a proposed update to the City of Trenton's classification and wage scale. He said the revision "does not include raises or cuts for current employees and does not increase or decrease the overall scale," but it retitles a long-vacant Finance Department position, adjusts a few Public Works classifications up or down one step to better align with department hierarchy, and adds an Assistant to the Service Director position to the full-time scale.
On the part-time scale, Mesisklis said the Fire Chief's pay had been left out of a 2023 adjustment and was based on a 20-hour workweek even though the chief works significantly more; the proposed change would raise the rate to about 80% of what comparable 20-hour positions receive. The item was presented as a first reading; council did not vote to adopt the ordinance at the work session.
