Commission hears proposal to convert farm fields to native grassland at Clinton Trails

The Parks and Greenspace Commission heard March 13 about a proposal to transition farm fields at Clinton Trails County Park to native grassland.
Coordinator Kyle Thornton said Christopher Lee from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working on a proposal to convert the fields. Chris Stewart reported discussions with Pheasants Forever about partnerships and volunteer workdays. Jan Motz and Kurt Wolf described weed pressure at a two-acre demonstration site at Clinton Lakes County Park and suggested a controlled burn could help; Thornton said letters went to adjacent landowners about an upcoming burn and that he will discuss adding the two-acre demonstration site to the contractor's burn when the north half of the grassland is completed.
Commissioners discussed monitoring seeded areas (this is the third year since seeding) and the need to determine whether reseeding is required. No formal action was taken; staff will pursue proposals and partner outreach.
