At the March 14 meeting the Village of Michiana Council approved purchasing a replacement radio base station for the police at a cost of $2,540. Chief Ryan Layman said the existing tower — the base for all radios — had stopped working after 25 years and the purchase was needed to restore the station. Tim McCarthy moved to approve the purchase; Mike Mumper seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Chief Layman also introduced Brendan Stadler, hired by Grand Beach and scheduled to attend the Police Academy in May; Stadler will replace Officer Jamie Flick, who retired this winter to become a full-time fire chief in New Buffalo Township. Layman reported ongoing investigation into vandalism that cut down 12 trees on Village property at Stop 40 and asked residents with information to contact the department.
Council also expressed interest in planting large hemlocks before Memorial Day to replace the removed trees and discussed cleanup of the area.
