Tree Board reports MDNR‑funded plantings and butterfly‑garden plans

Nancy Thill read the Tree Board and Garden Club update: five trees funded by an MDNR grant were planted in the village park on Sept. 25 by Sawyer Garden (a Black Gum, two Ironwood, one Dogwood and one Sugar Maple). Metal fencing has been placed to protect the newly planted trees from deer.
Thill reported that about 33 percent of Garden Club membership volunteered to assist with spring plantings and that the first portion of the MDNR financial report has been completed and submitted. She said a herbicide‑treated area will be ready for seeding by traditional broadcast methods in mid‑November and that she met with Beth from Pizzo Gardens to discuss a butterfly garden and border placement between turf and native plantings. Thill also proposed a pergola at the park entrance to be developed if funding allows.
Arbor Day (Oct. 5) included a proclamation read by Tim McCarthy; Anne Blasko officiated and Rima Binder, president of the Board of the Botanical Gardens, participated as a dignitary. Thill thanked Boy Scout Troop 802 and Girl Scout Troop 8022 for presenting the flag as honor and color guard.
