Council amends Tree Ordinance to restrict oak pruning amid Oak Wilt concerns

On Nov. 8 the Village of Michiana Council amended the local Tree Ordinance to set seasonal restrictions intended to limit spread of Oak Wilt. The ordinance change, moved by Council member Nancy Thill and seconded by Brian Cassidy, states: "Trees identified as oak will not be pruned between April 15th and September 15th. In the event where a tree is damaged or needs pruning, tools must be sanitized, and a latex based paint must be applied to the wound immediately after pruning." The motion passed on a roll-call vote of 5 ayes and 0 nays.
The amendment followed a Tree Board update from Nancy Thill that referenced an EGLE webinar on Oak Wilt and Pizzo Gardens' final herbicide application. The council also approved a separate Tree Proposal application for tree services conditioned on review by Village Attorney Sara Senica; that proposal passed 5–0 after an amendment requiring attorney review.
