Council seeks tips after 11 or 12 beachside trees cut on village property

Police Chief Ryan Layman told the Village of Michiana Council on Nov. 8 that officers are investigating vandalism on village-owned dunes near Stop 40. "Eleven or 12 trees had been cut down on the Village Property," Layman said, and he asked residents who saw or heard anything to contact the police department.
Council members asked staff to notify the village Arborist, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), and Chikaming Open Lands because the trees were in a Critical Dune area and on land held in trust. The council also requested an appraisal of the lost trees. No arrests or suspects were reported on the record during the meeting.
