Council approves first reading of 2025 county fire code with local amendments, raises fireworks penalties

Curtis Markloff, assistant fire marshal with San Bernardino County Fire, briefed council on the county ordinance adopting the 2025 edition of the California Fire Code with local amendments. Major local changes noted for Twentynine Palms include lowering the automatic sprinkler threshold from 12,000 square feet to 5,000 square feet, adding permits for battery energy storage systems and certain commercial operations, and clarifying minimum road widths and hydrant spacing for fire apparatus access. Markloff also said the ordinance increases the maximum penalty for transportation and storage of dangerous fireworks from $1,250 to $15,000.
Council moved to conduct the ordinance's first reading and the motion passed unanimously on roll call. "We reduced that square footage down to 5,000 square feet due to our local area," Markloff said during his presentation. The council scheduled the second reading as required by ordinance process.
