Commissioners authorize condemnation option for Service Avenue bridge right-of-way

The Mercer County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 8 approved a resolution authorizing condemnation of a parcel for right-of-way purposes needed to reconstruct a public bridge on Service Avenue in the City of Sharon.
Solicitor Bill McConnell told the board he is coordinating with the Bridge Department and the county engineer to prepare a Declaration of Taking; he said the county prefers to reach an agreement with the property owner but needs the condemnation authorization so there is "no interference with the funding for the bridge reconstruction." The resolution gives the chair authority to file any necessary documents under the Pennsylvania Eminent Domain Code.
The board recorded the resolution (2026-009) and approved it by unanimous vote. The authorization preserves the county's funding schedule and allows staff to proceed with right-of-way acquisition work if negotiations with the property owner do not produce a voluntary conveyance.
