Winhall police report heavy December DUI enforcement; chief flags aging cruiser and retiring K‑9

Chief Derrick Tienken told the Town of Winhall Selectboard on Jan. 7 that December was a busy month for DUI enforcement and that the department’s K‑9s have been recertified for the year. "Canines are recertified for the year too; their ability to find drugs and people is advantageous," Tienken said, and he added that K‑9 Gunner—about 8–10 years old—is retiring soon.
Tienken also raised equipment concerns: one cruiser has "over 100,000 miles on it" and "may need to be replaced soon, preferably with a Ford," he told the board, recommending the purchase be funded from the Police Equipment Reserve Fund. He said the department is now set up to track and bill for false alarms. The Selectboard took the report for informational purposes; no procurement motion was recorded at the meeting.
