The South Dakota Transportation Commission approved a $77,697,290.36 contract for grading, structures and surfacing work on I‑90 in Meade County during its May 15 meeting in Pierre. The contract was awarded to Heavy Constructors, Inc. after a motion by Commissioner Mike Vehle, seconded by Ron Rosenboom; all present voted aye by roll call and the motion carried.
Secretary Joel Jundt noted that the May 13 bid letting item is “the highest dollar amount awarded for a highway or bridge construction project in the history of the Department of Transportation.” The contract covers I‑90 east and west from east of Exit 44 to west of Exit 48 and includes multiple structure types and surfacing work described in the bid package.
The Commission took the action following the Office of Project Development’s bid report and did not receive public comment on the item. The award completes the formal letting and authorizes the Department to proceed with contracting and subsequent project administration under the Department’s standard procedures.
