The South Dakota Transportation Commission on May 15 approved a low bid of $77,697,290.36 from Heavy Constructors, Inc. for an I‑90 grading, structures and surfacing project in Meade County covering the corridor from east of Exit 44 to west of Exit 48, including Exit 46 (Elk Creek Road). The motion to award the contract was made by Commissioner Mike Vehle and seconded by Ron Rosenboom; all present voted aye by roll call.
Sam Weisgram of the Department of Transportation’s Office of Project Development presented the bid results. Secretary Joel Jundt noted that the project awarded as item #1 in the May 13, 2026 bid letting is the highest dollar award for a highway or bridge construction project in the Department’s history. The Commission took no further action on the project at the meeting beyond approving the contract award.
