Participants at the Sept. 18 meeting outlined several models for preserving the marina: municipal ownership with professional management, public–private–nonprofit partnerships combining grants, philanthropy and private investment, and nonprofit ownership examples that integrate aquaculture, education and recreation. The Sea Meadow Foundation model in Yarmouth was given as an example of nonprofit stewardship that combines multiple uses.
Speakers noted that each model carries tradeoffs: municipal ownership may require ongoing operational capacity and funding; partnerships can attract investment but require negotiated agreements; and nonprofit stewardship often depends on philanthropic support and grant funding. The group identified organizations and coalitions that could provide technical assistance and connections.
