Committee authorizes up to $10,000 to cover City of Corning attorney fees in Hoad matter

The Administration Committee voted Feb. 10 to authorize payment of an amount not to exceed $10,000 to cover attorney fees for the City of Corning related to a claim by the Hoad estate.
County Manager Jack K. Wheeler explained the county's exposure relates to two employees who moved to the county SWAT team and said the county has some minimal responsibility for attorney fees. Tim Rosell of the Law Department summarized the issues, saying there are "two issues; the first is the attorney fees for the incident and the second issue is the agreement." Legislator Kelly H. Fitzpatrick asked whether the county should ask the City of Corning to refrain from SWAT participation until an executed agreement is returned; Wheeler and Rosell said they would pursue the outstanding agreement with the city.
The motion to authorize the payment was made by Scott J. Van Etten and seconded by Brian C. Schu; it passed unanimously, 5-0.
