Historic commission seeks help for house repairs; court urges partnership and fundraising

Terry, representing the county historical commission, told commissioners the group's consultants identified urgent exterior repairs for an acquired historic house and asked for $100,000 to address windows, roof and other preservation needs: "This is not any kind of interior design. It's, things like, like, windows in the exterior and, the roof, stuff that needs to be done to keep the house from falling apart." The commission said it is pursuing a Friends nonprofit and limited fundraising but does not yet have a formal vehicle for receiving donations to a dedicated account.

Commissioners expressed support for preservation but said a full county appropriation at this scale would be difficult in the current budget year. The court asked the commission to report back with details of existing funds (laddered CDs were mentioned) and realistic fundraising commitments so the county can consider a matching or partnership contribution. Separately, commissioners and the commission flagged the Bannister Bridge (Old Highway 80 over the Brazos River) as a project that likely requires TxDOT coordination and external preservation funding; the court suggested preservation options (partial salvage or relocation of truss sections) but did not commit county funds at this meeting.
