Public health director: Lyme cases rose in 2025, county reports first babesiosis case; clinics and vaping program planned

Alyssa Broome-Quissimisse, Public Health, reported on Q1 goals and local disease surveillance at the April 6 Human Services Committee meeting. She said Yates County recorded 146 Lyme disease cases in 2025, roughly 50 more than in 2024, and noted the county's first identified case of babesiosis, which is a more severe tick-borne illness than Lyme disease.
Broome-Quissimisse also reviewed public-health programming: the department is recruiting a full-time public-health nurse, pursuing reaccreditation expected to conclude in September 2026, launching a multi-year youth vaping prevention program funded through the JUUL settlement in partnership with the Yates Prevention Coalition, and running clinics. She said a recent rabies clinic in Dundee vaccinated 126 animals and the next clinic is scheduled for May 6 at the Yates County Highway Department from 6 to 7 p.m.
