Council hears appraisal figures as county considers relocating animal shelter and negotiating with New Albany

Jason Sharp said the current provider has done well but expressed a preference to locate the facility within Floyd County rather than in Jeffersonville. Attorney Kristi Fox reviewed the Interlocal Agreement with the City of New Albany and said it designates the land as county-owned and the building as owned jointly. "The City hired an appraiser and got a value of $390,000.00. The County hired an appraiser and got a value of $441,000.00," Fox said, and the county's payment obligation was described as the average of the two appraisals divided by two, which was presented as $207,750.00.
Officials said they would need to negotiate the city's departure from the joint ownership arrangement and that options include rehabilitating the existing structure for another county purpose or demolishing it to make way for a potential new Judicial Center. The council expressed satisfaction with current animal control services and requested a new rate for the 2026–2027 contract year from the existing provider.
