Elko FISH highlights homelessness, mobile market and surge in food assistance

Sherry Smith, director of Elko FISH, gave the commission an overview of the nonprofit’s services and recent counts, saying the 2024 point-in-time count identified 67 school-age children experiencing homelessness in Elko County and listing shelter and food-distribution volumes from 2023. "One of our missions is not to let anybody go hungry," Smith told commissioners, and she described nearly 1,800 new client sign-ups last year plus 3,800 shelter nights and almost 40,000 food requests fulfilled.
Smith described program expansions designed to reach residents who cannot come to the food bank: a mobile market operating twice monthly at two locations and a DoorDash delivery program that serves clients within a 10-mile radius at no charge. She also noted partnerships and resource sources — local grocery donations, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, donations and purchases — and said Elko FISH distributed 658,137 pounds of food last year. The commission thanked Smith for her work and acknowledged the nonprofit’s role in serving working poor families, veterans, seniors and tribal members.
