La Porte approves long-term field-use agreement with girls softball association; league outlines facility needs

The La Porte City Council approved a multi-year agreement authorizing the La Porte Girls Softball Association to use and manage several city fields (Little Cedar Bayou Park, Otis Gay Softball Field, Fairmont Park Field 4) through Dec. 31, 2031. The contract gives the league sole discretion over field use for the calendar year and allows the city to appoint a nonvoting representative to the league's board; the association retains revenue generated from its activities.
Megan Smith, president of La Porte Girls Softball, told council the league registered 97 players this spring across seven league teams and seven select teams. Smith outlined recent capital improvements (pro-style pitching system and permanent pitching mounts) and requested future investments: additional restrooms, concession stand upgrades, batting cage improvements and infill turf installation to reduce rainouts and attract tournaments. Councilmembers discussed budget approaches (pre-funding through EDC or TERS funding) and staff said the project may be presented during FY27 budget planning if not funded this year.
