The La Porte City Council voted to accept the official canvass of the May 2, 2026 general and special elections and then administered oaths to newly elected officials.
City staff presented Ordinance 2026-5038 listing vote totals: Councilperson at-large Position B — Brent McCauley 764, Crystal Hammers 519; Councilperson District 1 — Mandy Williams 161; Councilperson District 6 — Wyatt Smith 107 and Robbie McLaren 225. On the propositions, staff reported Proposition A (municipal street tax reauthorization) passed in favor 946 to 394, and Proposition B (consolidation of Shore Acres with La Porte) passed in favor 860 to 487. After the results were read, the chair declared winners and council voted to accept the canvass. “I now declare that councilman Brent McCauley is the winner of his race,” the presiding officer stated during the announcement.
Following the canvass, city staff administered the oath of office to the newly elected members, including recitation of required anti-bribery and loyalty language. The oath sequence included statements that winners had not directly or indirectly promised money or a thing of value in exchange for votes. No contested legal challenge was announced at the meeting. Council indicated there may be one additional election matter to address at a later administrative meeting, and staff said they had consulted the Secretary of State and the city attorney’s office before recommending completion of the canvass this evening.
