Commission authorizes Invitation for Bid for jail commissary; avoids immediate termination notice

County Attorney Phil Eldridge presented an Invitation for Bid for the jail commissary with an advertised opening date of June 8, 2026; he advised the current commissary contract ends September 26, 2026 and recommended a termination notice dated August 10 if the county wanted to ensure a clean transition. Commissioners voted 3-0 to authorize the Chairman to sign the Invitation for Bid but to withhold terminating the current provider to avoid service disruption, retaining the current contract end date of September 26, 2026.
Eldridge noted logistical issues if the vendor changes, including removal of existing commissary equipment and a potential multi-month transition to restore full service. He told the Commission that under the current contract the vendor "will continue to furnish services until the new vendor is ready to provide services," language the county plans to rely on to prevent a lapse in commissary service during any vendor transition.
