Geneva County approves GPS tracking contract for road equipment

The Geneva County Commission voted 3-0 on Dec. 8, 2025, to move forward with Diversified Computer Services (DCS) to install GPS devices on county vehicles and equipment under a 24‑month contract at $20 per unit per month. Commissioner Jeff Hatcher made the motion to proceed and Commissioner Bart Wilks seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Dane Floyd of DCS described the system to the Commission, saying, "The devices will be hardwired to the equipment or vehicle." Floyd said the system supports geofences for district‑level tracking, can record when equipment PTOs are engaged, and that "the information will be stored on the device for one year" though DCS can retain specific older records for the county if requested. County Attorney Phil Eldridge said that use of non‑real‑time data likely "should not be an issue if it was not in real time" but emphasized the need to coordinate rules with the Sheriff because deputies operating sheriff vehicles are law enforcement and their records could include confidential or sensitive information.
Commissioners directed staff to develop procedures governing access to GPS data; the Sheriff's department will be treated separately in recognition of law‑enforcement sensitivities. The motion and vote were recorded as 3-0 in favor.
