Staff reported that the Texas General Land Office approved a Sylvan Beach cleanup for Sept. 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and outlined event planning and sponsorship options.
"We did get approved by Texas GLO for a cleanup, on September 19, 08:30AM to 12PM," staff said, recommending the committee not sign up as volunteers because the event will cap at 200 participants to keep the inaugural effort manageable. Staff proposed an event format that would include registration, informational booths (Galveston Bay Foundation, Waterkeepers, Texas Master Naturalists), and educational outreach on trash and vape collection.
Organizers discussed safety concerns around riprap and the possibility of future boat-supported cleanups with additional water-safety resources; staff said any water-side work would require extra safety measures. Several potential sponsors (OxyChem, HEB, local restaurants) expressed interest and staff offered to coordinate sponsorship logistics via the new committee email (keepLaPortebeautiful@LaPorteTX.gov).
Next steps: staff will circulate sponsorship materials, coordinate in-kind donations for shirts/food/water, and confirm site logistics and safety protocols. The committee agreed to assist with partner recruitment and to let staff manage registration and operations through the committee email to avoid duplicate outreach.
