Committee schedules fall plantings with Trees for Houston, flags watering and maintenance needs

Susie Burgess presented plans developed with Trees for Houston recommending species and rough locations for Spinwick Park, Creekmont Park and Seabreeze Park. The recommendations include American sycamore, loblolly pine, cedar elm and red maple depending on park conditions.

"They have already put these trees aside for us," Burgess said, noting Trees for Houston will also supply mulch, stakes, tree ties and guards. Parks staff advised adjustments to avoid pipeline easements, playground setbacks and power-line conflicts and suggested moving several dots on the plan to preserve access and avoid root conflicts.

Committee members pressed staff on maintenance and watering logistics. Parks staff described using a 300-gallon water tank for watering; filling one tank quickly requires a fire-station hookup and multiple tanks may be needed for larger sites. Staff recommended scheduling separate planting days for Creekmont and Seabreeze and a smaller photo-op planting at Spinwick. The committee agreed to refine the maps with Trees for Houston, confirm volunteer dates in November (Arbor Day window), and coordinate volunteer lists and watering plans ahead of planting.
