The Bedford County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an ordinance July 28 to clarify coverage and benefits for deputies working off‑duty events.
Sheriff Miller told the board the ordinance fills a gap to ensure deputies working private and public events are covered by line‑of‑duty benefits. He said deputies worked thousands of off‑duty hours supporting local events, security and regional needs and that the ordinance is a limited but important change to provide protections if a tragedy occurs.
Miller said deputies wear uniforms and use department equipment while working off duty and that the office worked with county counsel to draft the measure. The board approved ordinance O072826‑07 on a unanimous vote.
Why it matters: the ordinance clarifies benefits coverage for deputies and responds to practical needs around large public events and off‑duty assignments.
