Local resident says recent surplus auction appeared disorganized and undercut taxpayer value

At the start of the public-comment period, Santina Deming introduced herself and told the board she had reviewed the Rock Building and later attended the district's surplus auction. "Every desk, table, chair, piece of equipment was purchased with public funds," Deming said, and described the auction as organized in a way that, in her view, "created the appearance that this auction was almost designed to underperform rather than to maximize the return for taxpayers."

Deming listed specific concerns: the auction was scheduled at 3:30 p.m. on a Tuesday which limited public participation, the inventory used numbered sticky notes and contained errors, advertised items were not actually auctioned, and the district did not use companies that could have cataloged and marketed the assets at no upfront cost. She urged the board to review how the auction was conducted, confirm whether all surplus property was accounted for, and consider adopting a formal policy requiring comprehensive inventories and a clear process for future auctions.

Several board members later discussed the auction procedure in the meeting and requested a future workshop to review surplus and auction policies so the district can improve communication, inventory practice, and timing. Board member Miss Mathis explicitly asked for a workshop "to review all of our policies and the way we do them and look at alternatives."
