Board backs grant application for Buena Vista High School irrigation well to reduce municipal water demand

Town Administrator Brian Berger presented a proposal to separate Buena Vista High School's irrigation from the municipal water supply and instead use a well tributary to the Arkansas River. Berger estimated the project cost at "approximately $230,000" and said the change would reduce the Town's demand on Cottonwood Creek by around 10 percent while increasing capacity within the Town’s water allocation system.
Berger said the school district would secure a required augmentation and the town would pursue Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) grant funding to cover construction costs. Trustees discussed potential impacts on nearby groundwater users, whether additional conservation steps should come first, and the financial implications for future water rates and utility revenue. The Board reached consensus to support the grant application and adopted Resolution No. 2026-46, "supporting the grant application for a water plan grant through the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) and the completion of the BVHS irrigation well project."
