Board discusses new law on student trustee stipends and possible small increase to trustee stipend

During the meeting the board examined two bylaw-related items stemming from a law effective Jan. 1, 2024: whether to pay student trustees an amount equivalent to board members and whether to authorize up to a 5% increase in board-member payments.
Staff said the new law opened discussion about student-trustee compensation and explained a proposed $12.60 increase to the monthly stipend of $252 as an example of a 5% adjustment; staff will research whether the statute requires parity with regular trustee pay or allows a different amount. Trustees expressed general support for providing a stipend to recognize student trustees’ service while debating whether it should match trustee pay. Student board member Fidilani participated in the conversation and other trustees asked staff to return with research and a formal recommendation.
The board did not adopt a policy change at the meeting; staff will report back with a legal interpretation and proposed policy language.
