Board names neighborhood J school 'Pambo Elementary' over trustee's objection on process

The governing board approved the recommendation of the district's school naming committee to name the new neighborhood J K–8 school "Pambo Elementary". Staff said the naming committee unanimously selected the name and presented historical materials and prior name lists to the committee.
Trustee Sameek Modi opposed the action on process grounds, arguing that board policy (BP 7310, 2011) requires a citizen advisory committee to be appointed when naming district-owned buildings and that a citizen advisory committee had not been appointed for this selection. "I don't feel comfortable just with the process," Modi said, contending the committee composition and notice did not match the policy. The motion to approve passed 4–1 with Trustee Modi voting no.
