Parent urges board to address teacher absences and special-education supports

At the April 16 meeting a parent, Jay Johnston, used the public comment period to raise concerns about his daughter’s special-education supports after repeated teacher absences.
Johnston said the teacher’s extended absences “set her back pretty far in her educational progress this year” and that he has submitted emails to the superintendent and worked with the principal to seek remediation. He told the board he initiated an IEP and RSP processes to catch his daughter up and to obtain additional legal protections when absences exceed thresholds.
“I'm just really am hoping to get some action on it,” Johnston said, urging board awareness of similar problems he said affect other students. The board thanked him for coming forward; no board action was taken during the meeting, but the superintendent and school staff are the expected points of follow-up for personnel or service-level remedies.
Johnston referenced legal remedies and administrative processes available under education law and said he was not seeking to assign blame but rather to ensure his child receives appropriate services.
