Townshend treasurer resigns; board and residents seek clarity on budget timing

Alicia, the town treasurer, told the Select Board she resigned after her full-time employer required a choice between jobs and she could not sustain the part-time treasurer pay. "I did have to inform my full time employer, and they made me choose," Alicia said, noting she is grateful for the opportunity and remains willing to help on a volunteer basis.
Alicia presented a high-level financial overview and told the board the town is audited and not in bad standing. In response to questions about a negative highway fund balance, Alicia said the shortfall (a figure of about $311,000 was raised in questions) is a timing difference from early road-work payments and grant reimbursements still pending. "There was major road work that was paid early, and we have grant reimbursements that haven't come in yet," she said. The board discussed appointment procedures for filling a vacancy mid-term and agreed the select board may appoint an interim treasurer; they plan to contact NEMRC (NIMRC referenced) and start a transition team work stream to finalize a job posting and appointment process.
