Green Township Committee opposes state bill that would mandate ADUs

On June 15 Green Township’s Committee unanimously approved Resolution 2026-121 expressing opposition to Senate Bill 1786 (S-1786), legislation described in the resolution as requiring municipalities with population densities under 9,000 people per square mile to permit accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on single‑ or two‑family lots.
The motion was made by Bader Qarmout and seconded by Margaret Phillips. The Township Attorney explained current law requires a use variance to allow two uses on one lot and that, if passed as described in the resolution, S-1786 would limit municipal zoning authority. The resolution instructs the Clerk to send copies to the Governor, legislative leadership, the district’s representatives, and the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.
